THIS WEEK: The Washington baseball team (13-27 overall, 4-11 Pac-10) remains on the road this week as the Huskies travel to face Stanford in a three-game series at Sunken Diamond. The Huskies won one out of three last weekend at Washington State after having a pair of scheduled games at Gonzaga canceled due to rain. Last weekend, Stanford (22-16 overall, 6-9 Pac-10) won one of three in a series at Arizona State and then beat San Jose State Tuesday (yesterday). Game times this weekend are 6:00 p.m. on Friday, 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and 12 noon (a change from earlier schedules) on Sunday. Fans can follow along via Gametracker. Stanford's student radio station, KZSU, will also provide live coverage at kzsu.stanford.edu. The Huskies will start senior lefty Geoff Brown on Friday, sophomore right-hander Aaron West on Saturday and freshman righty Austin Voth on Sunday. The following week, Washington returns home for seven straight games. First up is a three-game series May 13-15 vs. Oregon State. The first of those three will be played at Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners. A single game vs. Pacific and three against Arizona State wrap up the season's final homestand. COACH MEGGS: Lindsay Meggs was named the Huskies' head coach in July of 2009, just the third different UW head coach in 34 years. In 2010, his first season in charge, he improved the Huskies' season record by five wins over the previous year, going 28-28 against a schedule ranked as high as third-toughest in the nation. Meggs came to the UW after having spent the previous three seasons at Indiana State and the 13 prior to that at Chico State, where he won NCAA Division II national championships in 1997 and 1999. He helped Chico to the D-II College World Series seven times and won the league eight times. At Indiana State, he was named Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 2009 after guiding the Sycamores to a second-place finish, their highest since 1998. Currently, he boasts a 656-362-4 record over 17 seasons as a four-year college head coach. He'd previously served as head coach at Long Beach City College and Oxnard College. Born in San Jose and a graduate of Saratoga (Calif.) High, Meggs played four seasons as the starting third baseman at UCLA. He was drafted by the Brewers in 1983, and then again by the Royals after his senior year in 1984. Meggs is joined by assistant coaches Dave Nakama, Dave Dangler and Jordon Twohig.
HUSKIES BACK AT SAFECO FIELD: Washington will return to Safeco Field for the fifth consecutive season this year when the Huskies host Oregon in a 6:00 p.m. game on Friday, May 13. Last year, the Huskies hosted 21st-ranked Stanford at Safeco and beat the Cardinal, 8-1, scoring in five of the eight innings they batted. Doug Cherry had two hits and Chase Anselment drove in a pair to lead the Dawgs. In 2009, the Huskies played two games at Safeco. A crowd of 3,675 saw a 3-1 Oregon State win and there were 4,296 on hand for a 6-4 Arizona State victory later in the year. In 2008, the Huskies got a two-hit, 15-strikeout complete game from Nick Haughian to beat Arizona, 1-0, before 5,187 fans. And in 2007, the Huskies beat No. 8 OSU, 6-2, in their first-ever game at Safeco. Attendance was 10,421, at the time a league record for a conference game. Tickets for this years game are $8 and UW students are admitted free.
WHERE ARE THEY FROM?: Washington's baseball roster has traditionally been heavily dominated by in-state players. The 2011 team is much more diverse than what had been the norm for many years as, of the 35 players, nine players completed their high school career in a state other than Washington (generally over the past few decades, that number has averaged closer to two or three out-of-state players). So, 26 Huskies come from in-state while there are six from California and one each from Minnesota, Indiana and Utah. Of the 26 players from the Evergreen State, 25 come from west of the Cascades, (the western half of the state).
