STILLWATER, Okla. -- The Division I PING All-Region men's golf teams were announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Tuesday and Washington sophomores Charlie Hughes and Chris Williams were named to the West team.
A total of 152 players across six regions - Northeast, East, Southeast, Midwest, Central and West - earned all-region honors for 2011.
In two short years, Hughes and Williams have carved out a stellar reputation on the golf course. The Husky pair were each named to the All-Pac-10 Team -- Williams earning first team recognition; Hughes honored on the second team -- after combining for 11 top-10 finished during the season.
Both Hughes and Williams won a tournament during the year, a career first for Hughes. The win was already the third of Williams' young career and puts him one behind the all-time UW school record.
Williams, who will represent the United States at the 2011 Palmer Cup (June 9-11, The Stanwich Club), led Washington with a scoring average of 71.16. He finished first or second among Huskies in 12 of 13 tournaments throughout the year.
Hughes averaged 72.18 strokes per round, which is the 10th best average in UW history. He finished first or second among Huskies in nine of 13 events and notched five top-10's among all competitors.
Williams is Golfweek.com's 22nd ranked player, while Hughes is 59th on that same list.
