SEATTLE - Washington will have a crowded bus on the drive down to Eugene next week, as thirty-four Husky track and field athletes have made the cut for the NCAA West Preliminary Championships held May 26-28 at Oregon's Hayward Field. Selections were announced today by the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee.
This is the second year of the current NCAA Championships format, which splits the country in half for preliminary rounds. The East Prelims will also take place May 26-28, hosted by Indiana in Bloomington. The goal for all prelim qualifiers is to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, from June 8-11.
In each individual event there are 48 qualifiers at each preliminary round site, with 24 relay teams at each location. One or two rounds will be held at the two regional sites to whittle the field down to 12 individuals and relays who will move on to Eugene. Multi-events are the only events that qualify directly to Des Moines based on top scores, with Husky junior Jeremy Taiwo making the cut in the decathlon
Washington's 34 qualifiers are five more than a year ago. Even more impressively, exactly half of UW's 34 participants will be competing at the NCAA Prelims for the first time in their careers. The 20th-ranked Husky men will be represented by 21 athletes with the UW women taking 13 athletes to Hayward Field.
The goal is to finish in the top-12 in each individual event. Husky women currently ranked in the top-20 in their event are freshman Katie Flood (7th - 1,500m), sophomore Justine Johnson (17th - 1,500m), freshman Megan Goethals (13th - 5,000m), sophomore Lindsay Flanagan (13th - 10,000m), junior Amanda Peterson (3rd - Javelin).
On the men's side, top-20 Huskies include newly crowned Pac-10 Champion James Alaka (12th - 100m; 17th - 200m), freshman Maurice McNeal (10th - 400m), UW's quartet of McNeal, Alaka, Colton Dunn and Ryan Hamilton (10th - 4x100m relay), senior Scott Roth (1st - Pole Vault), senior Kyle Nielsen (6th - Javelin), sophomore Joe Zimmerman (7th - Javelin), and sophomore Jimmy Brookman (14th - Javelin).
