THIS WEEK: The Washington baseball team (15-32 overall, 6-15 Pac-10) closes out the 2011 home schedule with a three-game series vs. No. 8 Arizona State (36-13 overall, 14-7 Pac-10) this Friday through Sunday at Husky Ballpark. Game times are 6:00 p.m. on Friday, 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday (all times Pacific). Fans can watch live video and follow live stats of all three games at gohuskies.com. For links to the coverage, go to the front page of gohuskies.com and click on the "Calendar" tab. The Huskies enter the series having won two straight, including a 7-6 victory over No. 2 Oregon State in which the Huskies had trailed 6-0. The Dawgs followed that with a 4-3 win over Pacific on Monday. The Sun Devils, currently tied for second place in the Pac-10, two games back of the Beavers, lost two of three at USC last weekend. The Huskies will send senior lefty Geoff Brown to the mound on Friday. On Saturday, freshman right-hander Austin Voth gets the start and on Sunday, righty Jacob Clem starts on senior day. Following the ASU series, the Huskies face Washington State next Tuesday in a non-conference game in Pasco, Wash., before closing out the season the following weekend at Arizona. COACH MEGGS: Lindsay Meggs was named the Huskies' head coach in July of 2009, just the third different UW head coach in 34 years. In 2010, his first season in charge, he improved the Huskies' season record by five wins over the previous year, going 28-28 against a schedule ranked as high as third-toughest in the nation. Meggs came to the UW after having spent the previous three seasons at Indiana State and the 13 prior to that at Chico State, where he won NCAA Division II national championships in 1997 and 1999. He helped Chico to the D-II College World Series seven times and won the league eight times. At Indiana State, he was named Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 2009 after guiding the Sycamores to a second-place finish, their highest since 1998. Currently, he boasts a 658-367-4 record over 17 seasons as a four-year college head coach. He'd previously served as head coach at Long Beach City College and Oxnard College. Born in San Jose and a graduate of Saratoga (Calif.) High, Meggs played four seasons as the starting third baseman at UCLA. He was drafted by the Brewers in 1983, and then again by the Royals after his senior year in 1984. Meggs is joined by assistant coaches Dave Nakama, Dave Dangler and Jordon Twohig.
WHERE ARE THEY FROM?: Washington's baseball roster has traditionally been heavily dominated by in-state players. The 2011 team is much more diverse than what had been the norm for many years as, of the 35 players, nine players completed their high school career in a state other than Washington (generally over the past few decades, that number has averaged closer to two or three out-of-state players). So, 26 Huskies come from in-state while there are six from California and one each from Minnesota, Indiana and Utah. Of the 26 players from the Evergreen State, 25 come from west of the Cascades, (the western half of the state).
