May 18, 2011
Early notes from the first round of the NCAA Championship at the Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas.
5:15 p.m. - Here are quotes from Husky players after round one ... click here.
Also, make sure to follow live scoring on NCAA.com as the field wraps up round one of the tournament.
2:07 p.m. - Well, round one is in the books for the Dawgs and the prevailing theme from the Husky golfers and coach Mary Lou Mulflur can be summed up in one word. Frustrating.
Mulflur was disappointed that players allowed bogeys to snowball into multiple bogeys. She also thinks they may have underestimated how big of a factor inexperience would play in the outcome for the day.
The team is in the clubhouse eating lunch and shot a 312 (+24). The score puts them in last amongst teams that wrapped up the morning round. The winds are picking up as the day gets later, so scores could balloon a little in the afternoon rounds.
It wasn't all doom and gloom for the Huskies. First off, there is still lots of golf to play, Mulflur pointed out. The Huskies got off to a slow start in the regional at Washington National, so the hope is they can snap out of the first round funk and show some second round mettle.
Second, senior Anya Alvarez had a great Championship debut, shooting a team-best 2-over 74. The score put her among the top-15 morning scores.
We'll have a recap once all the scores are tallied and some quotes and lots of photos from today's action. Make sure to check back later.
10:33 a.m. - The Dawgs had an early wake up call this morning prior to the first round of the NCAA championship. Just before 6:00 a.m. Central Time the team gather in the hotel lobby for a breakfast of champions.
After that, the five players, three coaches and trainer loaded the team van and headed to the course. After warming up, Kelli Bowers got things started for the Huskies.
Early on, the UW is struggling to find a groove. Bowers was the first Husky to convert a birdie, doing so at 10:20 on the 18th hole. But, there is a lot of golf to play and the Huskies are loose on the course and having fun.
The Huskies have an extra special fan following them today (and will be throughout the week). Former UW coach Edean Ihlanfeldt promised she would make the trek down to Texas if Washington advanced to the championhip and true to her world, she is on the course.
Washington is paired with Florida and Stanford during Wednesday's first round. UW assistant Andrea VanderLende played four years at Florida, helping them to a national championship.
"It's weird!" she said about walking around with the Gators.
