Webber Scores In Second-Straight Game

SEATTLE - Despite the Huskies' hard work and effort, the UW women's soccer team fell 2-1 to the Redhawks on Friday night at Seattle University. With key players out, it allowed others players to step up and gain more experience.
"With Lindsay Elston and Kate Deines gone for national team duty and Sarah Martinez and Kelsea Brajkovich on the bench with injuries, tonight was a great opportunity for a lot of different players to show," said head coach Lesle Gallimore.
The Redhawks came out strong with a goal in the 23rd minute by Ava Ames during the first half. They continued to battle during the half and scored a second goal off of an amazing save by Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann (Lakewood, Wash.) that reflected to forward Shawna Anderson with two minutes remaining.
The Huskies continued to fight and came out determined to come back in the second half. Forward Alex Webber (Poway, Calif.) scored a great goal in the lower right corner that was assisted by junior Faustine Dufka (San Francisco, Calif.) in the 62nd minute.
"Faustine had the ball on the other side and I knew that she was going to cross it so I made sure I was back post. Faustine played a beautiful ball over the defense and I just reached my foot out to bring it down. I kept my shot low and it went in," said Webber.
UW gained momentum and continued to press for another goal. They continued to create multiple opportunities, but ended with a 2-1 loss.
"I credit Seattle U for their fight and determination but we made it easy for them, which is disappointing. It is not Husky soccer not to be physically and mentally tougher. Results are results, but we continue to keep this in perspective. Opportunity is everything and we have two more opportunities to bring an attitude and effort that is more reflective of our standard," said Gallimore.
UW travels to the Starfire Sports Complex May 5th to play against the women's Sounders team at 7 p.m.
