April 25, 2011
PORTLAND, Ore. - On April 23 the UW men's soccer team headed down I-5 to the University of Portland to take on the U.S. U-18 Men's National Team, picking up a 3-1 victory.
Head coach Jamie Clark said the U-18 team, "is made up mostly of players that are going to be freshmen in college, so it's the best guys in the country that are present seniors in high school."
Junior Casey McCool (Bend, Ore.) scored the first two goals for UW in the first half.
"The first was a volley when a corner kick was cleared out to him," Clark said. "The second was a header off of a Zach Portillos cross."
The U.S. team scored a goal in about the 65th minute to make it 2-1.
Newcomer Ben Fisk responded five minutes later and scored a goal off another corner. "It was a scrappy goal with the ball dropping to him about five yards out," Clark added.
Sophomore Quinton Beasley (Camas, Wash.) hit the post twice in the first 15 minutes and junior Brent Richards (Camas, Wash.) had a few good chances late.
The next spring game is Friday, April 29 at 8 p.m. vs. the Tacoma Tide from the PDL. The game will be played at the Starfire Sports Stadium in Tukwila, Wash. The address is 14800 Starfire Way, Tukwila, Wash., 98188.
Former Husky Daniel Gray is a current member of the Tide for the second-straight year. Four current UW players played on the team last summer including: Spencer Richey, Tyler Klein, Casey McCool and Dylan Tucker-Gangnes.
The Tide roster is not finalized so more former Huskies might be playing on Friday. Current Huskies will be able to join the team in May.
