The Huskies Fall To Portland To Open Spring Play

PORTLAND, Ore. - The UW soccer team opened up the spring competition with a match at Portland on Saturday. It was the first chance for the Huskies to play another team since the Elite 8 game in November at Boston College.
UW spent all winter and spring training hard in preparation for 2011. Though the Huskies fell 2-1 on a penalty kick to the Pilots, it was a good test to see what the team would be like without the five graduated seniors.

"We played very well in the first half and created a lot of quality chances," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "With only four practices and an early wakeup call to drive to Portland, I was impressed with how we came out."
Sophomore Faustine Dufka (San Francisco, Calif.) put the Huskies up 1-0.
"We scored first on a great combination and attacking sequence and Faustine had a very good finish from inside the left side of the 18," Gallimore added.
Portland equaled the match in the first half on a ball sent to the far post between three Husky defenders and goalkeeper, junior Kari Davison.
The second half wasn't as fluid for the Huskies but the game remained tight until late when Portland worked the ball into the box.
Husky defender, freshman Molly Boyd (Seattle, Wash.) fell and while trying to recover for Molly, fellow freshman Hillary Zevenbergen (Woodway, Wash.) clipped a Pilot player and a PK was awarded. Danielle Foxhoven converted against junior goalkeeper Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann.
"This was a good challenge for us to begin our spring," said Gallimore. "We played very well at times, but as the game wore on I felt our decision making with the ball was sub-standard for us. It's a good jumping off point for us and we now have more time to get training sessions under our belt before our next match."
The Huskies will next play at Seattle Pacific on Wednesday, April 20 at 7 p.m.
