UW Selected As Host For 2012 Gymnastics NCAA Regionals

SEATTLE - The NCAA Women's Gymnastics Committee has chosen Washington as one of six hosts for the 2012 Regional Championships. Washington is one of two future Pac-12 schools, along with the University of Utah, to be chosen as a regional hosting site. This is the fourth time Washington has been selected to host the west regional, after previously being selected in 2003, 2005 and 2009.
The chair of the NCAA Women's Gymnastics committee, Paul Plinske, said of their choices, "We selected sites that will create an outstanding environment for our gymnasts and their fans. Women's gymnastics is an exciting sport and we look forward to bringing these talented student-athletes to various cities around the country."
The following is a complete list of the schools that have been chosen to host 2012 regional competition on Saturday, April 7, 2012: Arkansas, Auburn, Illinois, North Carolina State, Utah and Washington. The NCAA also announced today that the Georgia Institute of Technology has been chosen to host the National Collegiate Women's Gymnastics Championships at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Ga. on April 20-22, 2012.
The NCAA has also announced regional and national championship hosting sites for the 2013 season. On April 6, 2013, the following schools will host regional gymnastics competition: Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon State and West Virginia. On April 19-21, UCLA will host the National Collegiate Women's Gymnastics Championships at the newly renovated Pauley Pavilion.
Washington gymnastics coach Joanne Bowers credits the great team of people working in various fields at Washington with this opportunity. "Karen Baebler and our event staff do an incredible job hosting these events and it just helps our team to be able to compete at home, in our arena, on our equipment, in front of our fans. A home site advantage is definitely a positive in terms of getting an edge on the competition."
Despite looking forward to hosting regional competition next season, the Huskies are currently looking forward to the near future as they head to Norman, Okla. for 2011 regional competition. The top two teams at each of six regional sites as well as individual event winners will advance to the NCAA Championships in Cleveland, Ohio beginning April 15th.
