Whitney Completes Transfer To Washington

June 18, 2010
SEATTLE - Former Junior Olympics national all-around runner-up Meg Whitney, who spent her freshman season at the University of Utah, has transferred to Washington and will join the Husky gymnastics team this coming season, UW head coach Joanne Bowers announced today.
Whitney, from Mesa, Ariz., attended Red Mountain High School and competed at the club level for Desert Devils Gymnastics, the same club as incoming UW freshman Aliza Vaccher and former Huskies Chelsea Bakken and Kelly Gilbert.
"Meg should be able to help us out right away on all four events," said Coach Bowers. "She has a year experience of college gymnastics and has figured out what it takes to be successful. We were looking for a strong vaulter to come in and help us right away and we feel very fortunate to have gotten someone of Meg's caliber as an all-arounder."
Last year at Utah, Whitney's season was slowed by injury, though she did post a season-high score of 9.80 on the vault in a meet vs. Brigham Young.
"Academically, she will fit right in with our team's excellence in the classroom," added Bowers. "Meg earned a 4.0 in her freshman year at Utah. We are looking for people who epitomize the word student-athlete and Meg definitely is that type of person. She knows she is joining a program working our way to Nationals as a team and she is excited to help us do that."

Whitney was a member of the 2008 Junior Olympic national team and was the national runner-up in the all-around, while placing in the top 10 in vault and bars at the 2009 Junior Olympics. She was also a four-time Arizona Level 10 all-around champ and also took the vault, bars and floor titles at the 2009 state meet.
