Slovic Advances to Semifinals of Pac-10 Championships

Ojai, Calif. - Husky senior Alex Slovic advanced to the semifinals of the Pac-10 Men's Championship Singles with a straight-set win on Friday in Ojai, Calif. Slovic (Pancevo, Yugoslavia) beat Eoin Heavey of Cal, 6-1, 6-1 to win for the 179th time in his career, a new UW record for combined doubles and singles victories. Slovic has recorded 96 singles victories in his career.
Slovic was denied the 84th doubles win of his career though. He and teammate Daniel Chu dropped an 8-6 decision to Heavey and Geoffrey Chizever of Cal to be eliminated from the doubles championships. Patrik Fischer and Michael Ricks were also eliminated from the doubles bracket when they fell 8-6 to Matt Brooklyn and Wes Miller of Arizona State.
In the Pac-10 Men's Invitational Singles, Derek Drabble remained alive in the singles bracket. The Husky freshman from Johannesburg, South Africa beat ASU's Nick Hegarty 6-4, 6-4 to advance to Saturday's semifinals.
Ricks was the only other Husky alive in the singles bracket, but was eliminated by Garrett Snyder of USC. The UW senior lost in the quarterfinals 6-4, 7-6.
Drabble and Andy Kuharszky advanced to the semifinals of the Invitational Doubles flight with an 8-5 win over Jaysen Chung and Michael Look of UCLA. The pair also beat Oregon's Eric Pickard and Stephen Wiechert 9-8 in the first round. David Chu and Andy Gerst were eliminated in the first round with an 8-3 loss to Stanford's Eric McKean and Dave Ryan.
Pac-10 Championship action continues Saturday morning. Slovic with face Arizona State's Juan Carlos Rebaza in the Pac-10 Championship semifinals at 9:30 a.m., while Drabble will take on Cal's Daniel Sebescan in the Men's Invitational semifinals, also at 9:30 a.m. Drabble and Kuharszky are slated to take on Andrew Eklov of UCLA and Jeffrey Zeller of Stanford at 2 p.m. in the semifinals of the Invitational Doubles.
