June 2, 2006
SEATTLE -
Washington junior Martin Bingisser was named to the ESPN the Magazine District VIII All-Academic Track and Field first-team Friday, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Bingisser and the 10 others selected to the District VIII first team will now be on the ballot for ESPN the Magazine's Academic All-America team, to be selected by a member panel and announced later this month.A three-time top-three Pac-10 Championships finisher in the hammer throw, and the 17th-ranked thrower in the nation entering next week's NCAA Championships, Bingisser boasts an academic portfolio to rival that of his athletic accomplishments. The fourth-year junior earned his bachelor's degree in philosophy last June after just three years of college, and is currently completing his first year in UW's School of Law. Bingisser earned a 3.87 grade-point average in his undergraduate studies, and boasts a 3.72 law school GPA.
A 2002 graduate of Bellevue's Interlake High School, Bingisser was named to the Pac-10 All-Academic first-team on Thursday, and is a two-time first-team academic all-conference honoree. He is also the founder and operator of the Hammer Center network, the internet's most extensive source of hammer throw news, statistics and instruction.
Bingisser boasts the third-best hammer mark in Washington history. He is also among UW's all-time leaders in the weight throw indoors, and captured an indoor conference title in the event in 2006.
"Martin is what every student-athlete should be," said fifth-year track and field head coach Greg Metcalf. "To succeed in all areas like he does takes incredible amounts of preparation and self-discipline. He's a shining example to every student-athlete in this department."
