UW Finishes 14th In Directors' Cup Standings

Seattle - Washington placed 14th Wednesday in the final standings of the 2005 Sports Academy Directors' Cup. The Directors' Cup is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), United States Sports Academy and USA Today to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country.
Washington totaled 797.25 points to finish 14th and was one of seven schools from the Pac-10 Conference to place in the top-25 of this year's rankings. Stanford won the Directors' Cup for the 11th consecutive year with 1,238.75 points. UCLA was third at 1,067 and USC was 10th at 902.25. Arizona State placed 11th, California was 15th and Arizona was 18th.
Other Pac-10 schools that finished in the top-100 of the 2004-05 Directors' Cup standings were Oregon at 54th and Oregon State at 79th.
"To finish 14th among more than 300 Division I schools is a tremendous accomplishment," said Husky athletic director Todd Turner. "This is a strong reflection of the dedication and hard work put forth by all our student-athletes and coaches."
Washington's season was highlighted by two individual NCAA Champions and seven teams ranked in the top-10 in various polls at season's end. Men's golfer James Lepp and women's track and field pole-vaulter Kate Soma won individual NCAA titles in their respective sports. The men's golf team finished third in the NCAA team championships, while the volleyball team made the Final Four for the first-time in school history. The men's basketball team earned its first-ever No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. Women's soccer made its deepest run in the NCAA Championships, making it to the Elite Eight. Softball reached the NCAA Super Regional and women's crew finished ninth in the NCAA standings. The Husky men's crew team placed fourth at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships, a non-NCAA event.
Of the 23 Husky athletic programs, 19 advanced to postseason play or were represented by individual competitors. The Huskies boasted Pac-10 regular season team championships in men's golf, men's tennis and volleyball, while the Husky men's basketball team won the post-season Pac-10 Tournament.
Individually, Washington boasted three Pac-10 Champions and had three athletes named Pac-10 Players of the Year. Additionally, five Husky coaches took home Pac-10 Coach of Year honors. Washington had 24 student-athletes earn All-American honors, 61 selected for All-Pac-10 teams, 30 receive Academic All-American accolades and 131 chosen for Pac-10 All-Academic squads.
