Husky Golfers Climb Five Spots at NCAA Championships

May 20, 2004
Auburn, AL - Led by sophomore Paige Mackenzie's 3-under 69, the 12th-ranked Washington women's golf team posted its best single-round score at the NCAA Championships and moved up five spots to a four-way tie for 14th place entering Friday's final round of play. As a team the Huskies shot 9-over 297. Washington's three-day total is 36-over 900.
Washington will be teamed with Arizona and Tennessee during Friday's play. The Huskies will start their final round from the 10th tee at 9 a.m. local time. Washington has a chance to post its best-ever NCAA finish. In 1995 and 2001 the Huskies placed 16th overall. This year's tournament mark's Washington's sixth appearance at the NCAA Championships.
UCLA, the West Regional champion, owns a five-stroke lead over second-place Oklahoma State in the race for the team title. The Bruins posted a 2-under 286 Thursday and are 6-under 858 after 54 holes of competition. Top-ranked Duke, the East Region champion and heavy favorite to win the tournament is third at 1-over 865. The Blue Devils shot 292 Thursday to fall seven strokes behind the Bruins. California is fourth overall at 19-over 883.
A trio of players broke away from the pack Thursday in the hunt for medalist honors. UCLA's Susie Mathews and Oklahoma State's Karin Sjodin both shot 4-under 68 and remained tied for first at 8-under 208. California's Sarah Huarte is third at 7-under 209 thanks to a 5-under 67. Three players are tied for fourth at 2-under 214.
Mackenzie's sub-par round moved her up to 23rd on the leaderboard. She has a chance to make her second top-25 finish at the NCAAs. She was 25th during her freshman season in 2002.
Credit a late night telephone call between Mackenzie and her older brother, Brock, who is a senior All-American on the men's team, as motivation for her solid play Thursday.
"We were on the phone and about to hang up and I told him to play well," Mackenzie said. "I told him he better have a good round because I knew I was going to play well. He said that if I was going to beat him, I better go out and shoot 64. Well, it wasn't 64 but it was pretty good."
Mackenzie picked up a pair of birdies on her first nine holes before falling back to even. She then chipped in on the par-five fourth hole for an eagle to go back to two under. She dropped in a 12-foot putt on the seventh hole and just missed another on the eighth green to post the second-best single-round NCAA Championship score in Husky history. Mackenzie's 69 followed up a 78 she posted during the second round.
"That is usually what happens with Paige," said Husky coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "If she has a rough day she comes back and plays well and I would expect nothing less from her than to go out and have a great round."
Mackenzie has led Washington in half of its 10 tournaments this season. She entered the NCAAs with a team-best 74.39 stroke average. The 69 marked just the third time this year she has posted a score better than 70.
"I had a good feeling about today," Mackenzie said. "I hit the ball off the tee better today. Yesterday I hit four fairway bunkers off the tee and that just does not put you in a position to score. I felt like my swing was better and everything was just clicking. I made a few putts today that I didn't make yesterday and that really helped. Everything just felt better."
Husky freshman Ashley Bickerton had an even better rally than Mackenzie. After shooting 85 during the second round she rebounded to post a 72 Thursday. Back-to-back birdies over her final four holes helped her pull even. She did almost exactly the same thing during NCAA West Regional play. She shot 82 in the second round and came back with a 72 during the final day of play.
"My front nine was not great, but I managed to stay away from the high numbers," Bickerton said. "I really turned in on during the last five or six holes and that felt nice. I was going at the pins and was able to stick it today. Today I had a normal round of putting, so that was nice."
Washington's Sung Ea Lee shot 77 and is 62nd overall at 10-over 226. Senior Lindsay Morgan and freshman Amber Prange are tied for 95th at 16-over 232. Morgan had a 79 Thursday while Prange posted an 80. Bickerton is 107th overall at 19-over 235.
"Everybody has shown they can play the course," Mackenzie said. "We just haven't put it all together yet. We seem to show up late at tournaments, so hopefully tomorrow will be the day.
"I told them after the round that they have all proved they can play this golf course," Mulflur said. "Now, let's just prove we can do it as a team, not just individuals."
