Washington Announces Second Annual Elementary School Reading Program

May 6, 2003
SEATTLE - The University of Washington Athletics Department and Starbucks Coffee announce the launch of the second annual Partners in the Community Elementary School Reading Program. Seven competitive grants in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to schools that design the most creative reading program, which inspires and encourages students to read. Applications are available today through June 30, 2003.
The Partners in the Community Elementary School Reading Program is designed to support and encourage public schools in King, Pierce and Snohomish Counties with their continued efforts to promote literacy. Teachers, students and administrators are encouraged to create an activity that focuses on new and creative ways to encourage kids to read. The activities must directly affect students and could include reward and recognition programs, inspirational guest speakers and mentoring programs.
In the first year of this collaborative program, $1000 grants were awarded to five schools, including Jennie Reed, Park Orchard, Crystal Springs, Thorndyke, and Adams Elementary. This year, seven $1000 grants will be awarded to elementary schools that design the most creative literacy program.
"Reading is essential to the future success of our children," said Lois Maag, zone community relations manager, Starbucks Coffee Company. "This year, we are pleased to be able to offer seven grants and touch the lives of more students in our community."
Grant applications have been mailed to schools & libraries in the Puget Sound Area, and will be available through the UW Athletics Department. To apply, submit the official grant application, an endorsement by the school principal and a detailed budget by June 30, 2003 to the UW Athletics Department.
Applications will be judged on the quality of the project as a way to encourage reading among children, the financial need of the school and the involvement from key faculty or parent organizations and students. The seven award recipients will be notified in writing by August 1, 2003. Winning schools will be recognized at the UW vs. Indiana football game on September 6, 2003.
"This is a great opportunity to recognize and encourage literacy enrichment and help children succeed in school," said Washington Athletic Director, Barbara Hedges. "This program encourages students to celebrate their achievements and helps facilitate and encourage reading within our schools."
