May 9, 2002
Stanford, CA - The Washington women's golf team is in ninth place with a team score of 22-over 310 after the first day of play of the 54-hole NCAA West Regional Championships at the Stanford Golf Course. The Huskies are competing for one of eight spots to the NCAA Championship that takes place at Washington National Golf Course May 21-24.
Pepperdine grabbed a large early lead at the tournament, which saw only five of 107 golfers better par during the first 18 holes of play. The Waves shot 289 and lead second-place UCLA by seven strokes. California is third at 297 and Pac-10 champion Arizona is fourth at 299. The Huskies are just two strokes behind seventh place Arizona State.
Washington was led by three golfers who carded scores of 76 during the opening round. Louise Friberg, Lindsay Morgan and Paige Mackenzie all shot 76 to tied for 26th overall. Friberg was 1-under after her first 13 holes before hitting a three-hole stretch that resulted in a bogie and two double-bogies. Washington Kelli Kamimura is 74th at 82 while Michelle Grafos is 82nd at 83.
"We did not play well and we're going to have to play better the next two days to put ourselves in a better position," said Washington head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "There really wasn't anyone who had an outstanding day for us. We had a lot of average play. It was a tough day for a lot of teams, but we are capable for playing much better."
Pepperdine's Katherine Hull leads the field at 3-under 69. Arizona's top-ranked Lorena Ochoa and New Mexico's Kristi Larson are one shot back at 70. UCLA's Gina Umeck and Pepperdine's Lindsey Wright were the only other golfer to break par at 71.
The second round of the tournament takes place Friday and the final 18 holes will be played Saturday.
At the NCAA East Regional at LSU, Florida lead the team competition at 286, one stroke ahead of Auburn. At the NCAA Central Regional at Michigan State, Kent State holds a two-stroke lead over Oklahoma State after an opening-round 304.
