Men's Crew Opens Quest for National Championships

Camden, New Jersey - The Washington men's rowing team wrapped up four days of training at Princeton University, home of the U.S. National Team training headquarters, and moved to Cherry Hill, New Jersey as it prepares for the 100th Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships, May 30 - June 1 on the Cooper River.
Heat racing takes place Thursday, followed by semi-finals Friday and grand finals Saturday. The Huskies' varsity eight, currently ranked No. 2 in the country, makes the first appearance for Washington, when it races in the last of four heats at 8:12 a.m. Immediately following is heat one of the freshman men's eight, at 8:24 a.m., where Washington enters as defending national champion in the event. The men's open four goes off at 10:12, with the Huskies in that first heat, and the junior varsity completes the day with heat one of its group at 11 a.m.
Winners of the varsity and freshman eights and the open four heats advance to semi-finals Friday, while winners of the junior varsity heats advance directly to grand finals Saturday. Repechage, or second chance, heats take place Thursday afternoon, for those crews that do not win.
"This is what we work all year towards," said UW men's coach Bob Ernst. "We are in heats we can win, and that's the first step. The guys are ready to race. We had a good week of training at Princeton and now it's time to get down to business. This is what it's all about."
