Garthwaite Named Player Of The Week
April 1, 2002
Washington center fielder Jay Garthwaite has been named the Pacific-10 Conference's Player of the Week, the conference office announced today, marking the second time in three weeks that Garthwaite has earned the honor.
Garthwaite, a junior from Kent's Kent-Meridian High, led the Huskies to a 3-2 record in games last week at Washington State and Arizona State. He went 11-for-22 (.500) in the five games, driving in a remarkable 16 runs. He also scored eight times, hit two doubles and belted four home runs. He slugged for an outstanding 1.136 percentage and also walked three times to account for a .560 on-base mark.
His 16 runs batted in in the one week alone were more than all but one of his teammates have posted all season.
Garthwaite currently leads the Huskies with 42 runs batted in after leading the team with 46 last season. His nine home runs and three triples also lead the Huskies. He has hit a home run in six of his last eight games.
Arizona State's Mike Esposito, who struck out a career-high 17 in the Devils win over Washington last Friday, won the Pitcher of the Week award.
The Huskies take on Gonzaga in a pair of 6:30 p.m. games Tuesday and Wednesday at Husky Ballpark before travelling to face Missouri this weekend in a non-conference series.
