Women's Basketball Players Earn Academic Honors

Walnut Creek, Calif. - Washington junior co-captain Loree Payne (Havre, Mont.) was named to the 2002 Pacific-10 Conference Women's Basketball All-Academic team announced today by Commissioner Tom Hansen. Sophomore starter Andrea Lalum (Bozeman, Mont.) was named to the second team while juniors Emily Autrey (Kennewick, Wash.) and Kellie O'Neill (Edmonds, Wash.) and sophomore Giuliana Mendiola (Lake Forest, Calif.) earned honorable mention recognition.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
For Payne, who led the Huskies with 14.3 points per game this year, it is her second conference academic honor. She was named to the second team as a sophomore last season. Payne currently carries a 3.68 grade point average in psychology. Lalum, the Huskies' starting center, has a 3.44 gpa as a pre-major. Autrey and O'Neill are both majoring in English as juniors while Mendiola, the Huskies' point guard, has not yet declared a major.
The women helped lead Washington to a record of 19-12 overall and a 12-6 mark and second place finish in the Pac-10. The Huskies were invited to the WNIT, where they hosted North Texas and USC before falling to Oregon in the third round at Bank of America Arena.
The Huskies' next activity is a tour to Australia, June 15-26.
