UW Freshman Claire Carter Upsets 12th-Ranked Opponent in NCAA Women's Tennis

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Washington freshman Claire Carter upset 12th-ranked Martina Nedelkova on Tuesday to advance to the second round of the NCAA women's tennis singles championships at the Lincoln Tennis Center.
Carter defeated Virginia Commonwealth's Nedelkova in straight sets, winning by a 6-2, 7-6 tally. She moves into the 32-player second round to meet No. 54 Joanne Masongsong of Texas who was a 7-6, 6-4 winner over Washington State's Erica Perkins.
The Huskies' only other singles competitor, senior Kristina Kraszewski, was also victorious with a 7-5, 6-1 win over No. 33 Janet Walker of Texas. She has a second-round matchup with No. 46 Lindsay Dawaf of Florida. The 11th-ranked Kraszewski is making her school record fourth consecutive NCAA singles appearance.
The NCAA singles and doubles competitions were delayed by the inclement weather that has battered Georgia since Saturday. The doubles matches were moved indoors.
Washington has a pair of doubles duos competing in the 32-team field, both of which had their matches postponed by the weather. Kraszewski and sophomore Darija Klaic, the nation's 10th-ranked tandem, have a match pending with No. 3 Paola Palencia and Ipek Senoglu of Pepperdine. Carter and junior Ilona Kordonskaya, ranked No. 26, are scheduled to meet the Ohio State team of Kristy Dascoli and Monica Rincon.
The Huskies registered their best finish ever, reaching the quarterfinals of the women's team competition that concluded on Sunday. Washington lost 4-0 to No. 4 Florida on Friday after a 4-3 triumph over No. 5 Tennessee on Thursday.
