USA Basketball Jones Cup Team Opens Training Camp

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The 2000 USA Basketball Women's R. William Jones Cup Team, comprised of twelve of the nation's top college players, will train at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., July 2-11 before departing for Taipei, Taiwan to compete in the five-day, six team R. William Jones Cup Tournament.
The USA's first practice is scheduled for 5:30 - 8:30 p.m (all times MDT) Sunday, July 2. Two-a-days begin Monday, July 3, with training sessions slated for 9-11 a.m. and 5:30-8 p.m., with a break on Tuesday for the Fourth of July, when practice will be 1-4 p.m. The twice daily schedule will resume Wednesday, July 5 and Thursday, July 6. The weekend schedule is Friday, 9-11 a.m., Saturday 9-11 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. and Sunday 1- 4 p.m. Monday's practices will be from 9-11 a.m. and 5:30-8 p.m.
The final practice at the Olympic Training Center will be Tuesday, July 11 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The team will depart Colorado Springs early Wednesday, July 12, and is scheduled to arrive in Taipei, Taiwan on the evening of Thursday, July 13.
The Jones Cup Tournament, which has the USA playing five games in as many days, begins Sunday, July 16, with the USA team facing the host Republic of China National Women's Team. On Monday, July 17, the USA will play the Korea Collegiate All-Star Women's Team, followed by the Japanese National Women's Team on Tuesday, July 18, the Kazakhstan National Women's Team on Tuesday, July 19, and the U.S. will finish the tournament on Wednesday, July 20, facing the Malaysia National Women's Team.
Following the completion of the 2000 Jones Cup, team members will enjoy a break before reassembling on Aug. 29 in Honolulu, Hawaii, to begin training for a Sept. 3 exhibition game against the USA Basketball Women's Senior National Team. The contest, held at the University of Hawaii's Stan Sherrif Center, will be nationally televised on ESPN2 and will be the final domestic exhibition game for the USA Senior National Team before it leaves for Australia to complete its preparations for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

William Jones Cup Team after Trials were held May 17-22, were: Chantelle Anderson (Vanderbilt / Vancouver, Wash.), Sue Bird (Connecticut / Syosset, N.Y.), Camille Cooper (Purdue / Georgetown, Ky.), Marie Ferdinand (Louisiana State / Miami, Fla.), Deanna Jackson (Alabama- Birmingham / Birmingham, Ala.), Brandi McCain (Florida / Silsbee, Texas ), Loree Payne (Washington / Havre, Mont.), Shea Ralph (Connecticut / Fayetteville, N.C.), Kelly Schumacher (Connecticut / Quyon, Canada), Michelle Snow (Tennessee / Pensacola, Fla.), Jackie Stiles (Southwest Missouri State / Claflin, Kan.) and Brooke Wyckoff (Florida State / West Chester, Ohio).
The USA Jones Cup squad will be headed by Virginia Tech head mentor Bonnie Henrickson. St. Joseph's University (Pa.) head coach Stephanie Gaitley and Grambling State University (La.) head mentor David "Rusty" Ponton will serve as assistant coaches for the Jones Cup team.
