O.D. HONORED: Washington's head coach O.D. Vincent was named National Coach of the Year by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), for his outstanding accomplishments and achievements during the 1999 season. Vincent received the Dave Williams Award as coach of the year at the GCAA National Awards Banquet, Feb. 3 in Orlando, Fla. Vincent was selected for the 23rd annual award, named after the legendary University of Houston coach, in a vote by his Division I coaching peers. "The most meaningful thing about this award is that it's voted on by the coaches," said Vincent. "Being recognized by your peers in any profession, as doing the best job last year, is probably the highest praise you can receive. I was very surprised when I heard the news. Most of the thanks and credit goes to our players who performed so well last year. Thanks goes to every player who has been a part of the rebuilding of Husky golf. We've all grown together and learned together. The players have been patient and open-minded in trying different approaches. I especially would like to thank Barbara Hedges and Marie Tuite and everyone at the University of Washington for taking a chance on me. I had no coaching experience when they hired me. I appreciate those who believed in me and have allowed me to succeed and to have fun in the process."
HEAD COACH O.D. VINCENT: In just four full seasons as the head coach of Washington men's golf, O.D. Vincent has become the winningest golf coach in school history. In 1999, he shared the Pac-10 Golf Coach of the Year Honors with Arizona State's Randy Levin after leading the Huskies to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Vincent graduated from UW in 1991 with a degree in sociology, and was one of Washington's most decorated golfers. Vincent captured medalist honors at the 1988 Pac-10 Championships, and led the Huskies to the team title. Following a brief professional career, Vincent joined the UW staff in 1994 as a volunteer assistant before being named head coach prior to the 1995-96 season.
ABOUT WASHINGTON: The Husky men's golf team put together its best performance in school history last year, finishing fourth in the team standings while then-freshman Troy Kelly finished tied for second individually at the NCAA Championships. The Huskies also captured three event titles to go with their school-record fourth-place showing at the NCAAs. Head coach O.D. Vincent shared Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors with Arizona State's Randy Lein. A record four Huskies were named to the all-Pac-10 team, led by Kelly, who became the first Husky freshman since 1988 to receive first-team all-conference honors. Kelly's second-place tie at the NCAAs was the best finish ever for a Husky men's golfer, eclipsing Vincent's 19th-place showing in 1988.
HUSKY SIGNEES: Washington golf has announced the signing of its Fall, 2000 freshman class. Included are some of the state's top junior golfers. Corey Prugh, from Ferris High School in Spokane, Wash., is an American Junior golf Association All-America honoree and was the 1999 4A prep champion last season. From Yakima, Eisenhower High's Brock Mackenzie has several AJGA top-five finishes to his credit. Dan Potter of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, has top-25 finishes at the 1999 PNGA Amateur and the Washington State Amateur, as well a second-place individual finish for Gonzaga Prep at the Washington 4A State Championship. The final signee from Palm Desert, Calif., is Joey Ramos of Palm Desert High. Ramos captured a fourth-place finish at the 1998 Junior World Golf Championships and followed with a top-10 finish in 1999.
