Hooker Wins Two Track Titles at Prestigious Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa - Washington junior Ja'Warren Hooker raced to victories in the men's 100- and 200-meter events and freshman Kate Bradshaw claimed the women's 10,000-meter title duirng the prestigious Drake Relays at Drake Stadium.
A product of Ellensburg (Wash.) High School, Hooker clocked a time of 10.28 seconds to handily win the 100-meter race. Texas-Arlington's Andra Fifer finished second in 10.54. Hooker won the 1998 Drake 100-meter crown, but was forced out of the competition last year after suffering an injured hamstring during the preliminaries. During this year's prelims, Hooker posted the fastest qualifying time of 10.20 that was his best legal mark this season.
Hooker outraced the field in a special invitational 200-meter race, registering a time of 20.63. Runner-up Leo Settle of Texas-El Paso finished in 20.81.
Bradshaw breezed to an easy 32 second victory in her collegiate 10,000-meter debut while recording the fifth fastest time in Husky history. The Issaquah (Wash.) High School graduate posted a time of 34:46.46 to reach the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. Bradshaw's closest competitor, Mary Ellen Hill of Bradley, had a second-place time of 35:19.31.
For the second straight season, Husky junior Justin St. Clair finished second in the men's javelin competition behind Scott Russell of Kansas. Russell had a winning heave of 231-8 and St. Clair threw the spear 227-5. Senior Ben Lindsey placed fourth in the discus (187-5) and 11th in the shot put (55-3).
The Washington men's 4 x 1600 relay unit was unable to defend its Drake Relays championship, placing sixth with a time of 16:42.49.
A pair of UW women took registered third-place performances. Junior Anna Aoki was third in the 5,000 meters (16:28.30) and sophomore Kelsey Sheppard was third in the 400-meter hurdles (59.93).
The next meet for the Husky track & field teams is the Brigham Young Invitational on Saturday, May 6 in Provo, Utah.
