Garthwaite Earns Pac-10 Honor
April 25, 2000
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Freshman Jay Garthwaite, the Washington baseball team's designated hitter, was named the Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Week yesterday. UCLA's Josh Karp, a sophomore from Bothell, Wash., earned the Pitcher of the Week award.
Garthwaite, from Kent, Wash. (Kent-Meridian High), batted 9-for-18 (.500) last week as the Huskies swept a pair of games from San Francisco and won two of three at 23rd-ranked Wichita State.
The right-handed hitter also added six runs, eight runs batted in, a double and two home runs. In last Friday's 15-10 win over Wichita State, he was 3-for-4 with a homer and five RBI.
Garthwaite's honor is the second by a Husky player this season. Todd Linden won the initial Player of the Week award in February.
