March 23, 2000
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Jenny Topping went 6-for-8 with a home run and two doubles and Kim DePaul was 5-for-8 to lead the top-ranked Washington softball team to a doubleheader sweep at San Diego State on Thursday, 4-0 and 10-2. The Huskies improve to 35-2 on the season and will take on Long Beach State in a twinbill on Saturday to conclude their 10-day, 14-day Spring Break trip.
In the opener, Washington put two runs on the board in the third inning to begin the scoring. Consecutive singles by senior Rosie Leutzinger, junior Kelly Hauxhurst and DePaul set the table for a two-RBI double by Topping. Leutzinger led off the sixth with a double and scored on a long single by Topping.
One more run came in the final frame. Senior Melissa Downs singled and pinch runner Jessica Bork stole second before senior Erin Helgeland singled her home. Senior Jamie Graves (17-1) struck out six in as many innings before being relieved by sophomore Bridget Wilcox.
The Huskies jumped out quickly in the nightcap, scoring five runs in the first two innings. Hauxhurst struck out but reached first on a passed ball and DePaul singled before a Topping single brought Hauxhurst home. Senior Jennifer Spediacci walked and an error during Helgeland's at-bat helped DePaul across.
In the second inning, Leutzinger walked and stole second before scoring on a single by Hauxhurst, who reached second on a fielder's choice. DePaul singled to put Hauxhurst on third before stealing second. Topping knocked both home with a single. Junior Christie Rosenblad tripled in the third inning and crossed home plate on a single by sophomore Shannon Walsh to put the Huskies up, 5-0.
San Diego State's two runs came in the second, and Washington didn't score again until the sixth frame on doubles by DePaul and Topping. Topping homered in the seventh inning for the 17th time of the season to score Hauxhurst, who had singled. Bork had crossed home plate on an error after Walsh had reached first on an error.
Spediacci whiffed seven batters in a complete game to improve to 18-1.
