Top-ranked Santa Clara visits Husky Soccer Field on Sept. 10
Aug. 17, 1999
SEATTLE - The Washington women's soccer team faces a difficult schedule in pursuit of its fifth NCAA Tournament berth in the last six years. The Huskies' 1999 schedule features five teams that are ranked among the national Top 20 by Soccer America magazine, including top-ranked Santa Clara.
The Huskies kick off the season on Saturday (Aug. 21) with an exhibition game against the Alumni at noon. Washington opens the regular season on Sept. 3 with their first ranked opponent as they play at No. 10 Clemson on Sept. 3.
The regular-season home schedule starts with a bang with preseason championship favorite Santa Clara. The top-ranked Broncos visit Husky Soccer Field on Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. Washington is also scheduled to meet fourth-ranked Portland, No. 13 Stanford, and No. 20 BYU.
The matchups with highly-ranked opponents are nothing new for the Huskies whose schedules have been rated among the nation's 10 most difficult each of the last four seasons.
The Washington women, led by sixth-year coach Lesle Gallimore, return nine starters from a team that participated in the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies posted a 10-9-1 record, placing fourth in the Pacific-10 Conference with a 6-3 mark.
Junior Tami Bennett, a product of Seattle Christian (Wash.) High School, returns after leading the team with nine goals last year. She was a first-team All-Pac-10 Conference selection.
