April 9, 1999
Los Angeles, CA -- Washington's 15th-ranked men's tennis team lost a close battle to USC, 4-3, today at Marks Tennis Stadium in Los Angeles. The Huskies' Pac-10 record drops to 2-3, 15-7 overall, while No. 11 USC improves to 3-1 and 16-3 overall. The Huskies began the day winning the doubles point but lost four of six singles matches to conclude the contest. The Huskies have never beaten the Trojans in the 16 all-time meetings.
Fourth-ranked Robert Kendrick improved his record to 26-6 with a 6-4, 6-2 No. 1 singles win over Patrick Gottesleben. Kendrick improves to 8-0 when playing the No. 1 singles slot. Kendrick teamed with Eric Drew to defeat USC's Roman Kukal-Gottesleben 8-5 in No. 1 doubles play. The 19th-ranked duo improved to 12-3 on the season.
The win gives Drew 17 doubles wins this year and 66 career doubles wins. He is now tied for second-place on Washington's career doubles win list. Drew needs three more doubles wins to become Washington's all-time doubles wins leader.
Washington returns to action tomorrow facing top-ranked UCLA at noon. The Huskies are 0-2 against the Bruins this year, losing 5-2 and 4-3 in matches in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
