Husky Gymnasts Fall at Arizona State

Tempe, AZ - Competing without six-time All-American Tiffany Simpson, the No. 11 Washington women's gymnastics team was edged by No. 6 Arizona State 193.950 to 192.250 in Tempe. It was the first Pac-10 meet of the season for both teams.
The Huskies held the lead in the meet after three rotations (144.525 to 143.975), but the Sun Devils used a strong showing on floor exercise (49.175) to earn the win. The victory extended Arizona State's regular-season home winning streak to 13 competitions. Washington dropped to 0-2 this season.
Washington's effort was highlighted by junior All-American Lauren Riesenman's all-around performance. The Husky junior turned in the third best total score (38.925) in her career to win the all-around competition. It was Riesenman's first all-around title during her three-year UW career. She recorded scores of 9.650 on vault, 9.700 on bars, 9.775 on beam and 9.800 on floor.
With Simpson out of the lineup due to a stress fracture in her right leg, the Huskies went with four all-arounders and used three freshmen in their lineup. Sophomore Lanna Apisukh scored 38.825 in the all-around while senior Amber Erdos posted a score of 37.525 and freshman Sidney Field scored 37.925, a significant improvement from her 36.000 performance in her collegiate debut last week vs. Georgia.
The Sun Devils were led by junior All-American Elizabeth McNabb, who won the beam (9.850) and floor exercise (9.950) events. Arizona State's Elizabeth Reid won the vault (9.750) and uneven bars (9.850) to give the Sun Devils a sweep of event titles.
Washington returns to Hec Edmundson Pavilion this week to play host to Arizona and Nebraska on Friday at 7 p.m. Both the Wildcats and Cornhuskers were ranked in the top-20 last week and opened their respective seasons with victories.
