UW Distance Duo Reaches NCAA 10,000-Meter Qualifying Standard
March 28, 1999
STANFORD, Calif. - Washington senior Deeja Youngquist and junior Anna Aoki both reached the NCAA automatic qualifying standard in the women's 10,000-meter event, registering two of the fastest times in school history at the Stanford Invitational.
Youngquist shaved nearly one minute off her 10,000-meter career best with a fifth-place time of 34:04.70. Aoki, the 1998 Pac-10 champion in the 10,000 meters, placed seventh with a time of 34:05.30 that bettered her previous best time by nearly a minute. Those times are the second- and third-fastest in Washinton school history, trailing only the school record of 33:13.45 established by Regina Joyce in 1983.
Texas Tech's Leigh Daniel paced the elite women's 10,000 field with a time of 32:53.95.
Husky senior Lara Kelley placed fourth in the women's 400-meter hurdles (1:00.07) and eighth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.37). She clocked a career-best time of 14.11 in the 100 hurdle semifinals.
UW senior Monique Glass finished eighth in the women's 400 meters with a time of 56.55.
Washington junior Geoff Perry posted a ninth-place men's 1,500-meter time of 3:51.20.
