Washington Edges Stanford in Pac-10 Gymnastics
February 13, 1999
Seattle - Washington used a strong finish on floor exercise to rally to narrowly defeat Stanford and win a four-way womens gymnastics meet at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. The Huskies edged the Cardinal 192.975 to 192.950 to raise their record to 7-5. UC Davis edged out Seattle Pacific 187.800 to 187.700 for third-place honors.
The Huskies looked like they had literally fallen out of contention for the meet championship due to a series of mishaps on uneven bars. Washington was forced to count two falls and could only muster a score of 47.350 on the event. The Huskies best score on the event was a 9.750 turned in by sophomore Lanna Apisukh.
"At the time, I though, Well, there goes that," said Husky coach Bob Levesque. "But then I kept looking over and seeing Stanfords scores on the beam. I knew they were having their own troubles."
While the Huskies were falling on bars, the Cardinal could do no better on beam. Forced to count several scores that included falls, Stanford turned in a disappointing 47.225 score on beam. Jen Exaltacions 9.800 score proved to be the best by Stanford and left the door open for the Huskies. Washington followed the Cardinal on beam and scored a season-high 48.600.
Trailing 144.700 to 144.350 going into the final rotation, the Huskies pulled out the win on floor by turning in three of the top five scores in the meet. Apisukh led the Huskies with a 9.875 score to place first in the event. She also tied for first on the vault (9.825) and won the beam (9.850) to handily win the all-around competition with a career best performance of 39.300. It marked the third time in Washingtons last four meets she has won the all-around competition.
"Lanna has really carried us this past month," Levesque said. "She was just spectacular tonight. When we needed the big routine, the big score, she came through in the clutch. Shes just a sophomore, but she is already establishing herself as one of the best all-arounders in the nation."
Exaltacion was second in the all-around with a score of 38.925. Stanfords Jenny Wilson tied Apisukh for the vault title. Washingtons Lauren Riesenman placed second on floor with a 9.825 while Mandi Klug was the runnerup on beam with a 9.800 score.
Washington senior All-American Tiffany Simpson performed a routine on bars, marking the first time since the season-opener that she has competed. Simpson has been sidelined by a stress fracture in her right leg. The Huskies hope to have her back in the lineup by the end of the season.
