March 20, 1999
Corvallis, OR - Bruins Use School-Record Score to Claim Team Title UCLA used a strong finish on floor exercise to win the Pac-10 womens gymnastics championship with a school record score of 197.775. The win was the Bruins eighth Pac-10 title in the 13-year history of the event. Oregon State also posted a school record score of 197.400 to place second at the meet.
Washingtons score of 194.425 was its second best point total of the season, but the Huskies could only muster a sixth-place finish at the meet. The Huskies were led by sophomore Lanna Apisukh, who scored 39.325 to place fifth in the all-around competition. Apisukh tied her career high on floor exercise with a score of 9.950 and equaled her career best on vault with a score of 9.900. Her vault score allowed her to tie for third place in that competition. The Huskies team vault score of 49.075 was a season high.
UCLA looked like it would run away with the team title when the Bruins got off to an early lead in the meet thanks to scores of 49.425 on vault and 49.325 on bars. The Bruins had to count a fall on beam and that gave Oregon State a shot at the team title. The Beavers were led by a pair of perfect scores recorded by Lara Degenhardt on floor and Danae Phillips on uneven bars. UCLAs Heidi Moneymaker led the Bruins to the championship by winning the all-around competition with a score of 39.675.
Oregon State head coach Tanya Service was named the Pac-10 coach of the year and UCLAs Kiralee Hayashi was named the gymnast of the year.
Washington will conclude its regular season Thursday when the Huskies compete at Seattle Pacific.
