Football Holds on to Defeat Cal

October 17, 1998
SEATTLE, Wash. (AP) - Marques Tuiasosopo ran for two touchdowns in the first quarter and Joe Jarzynka had a 91-yard punt return for a TD in the second as Washington made it 16 in a row over California with a 21-13 victory on Saturday.
The Huskies (4-2, 2-1 Pac-10) made a 21-0 lead stand up against the Golden Bears (4-2, 2-1) with a strong defense that sacked Justin Vedder 13 times and stopped Cal at the Washington 1 in the fourth quarter.
Jarzynka put Cal in a 21-0 hole with 4:44 left in the opening half when he took Nick Harris' 45-yard punt on the Washington 9 and outran the Bears into the end zone. It was the Huskies' third-longest punt return for a TD in history.
That came after Tuiasosopo, starting at quarterback in place of injured Brock Huard, stunned the Bears with a 39-yard touchdown run on a third-down play and scored on a 1-yard keeper in the opening quarter.
Cal, which hasn't beaten Washington since 1976, fell short trying to come back as it did last week in beating Southern Cal.
With 1:41 to go, Vedder passed 12 yards to Dameane Douglas for Cal's second TD before Ignacio Brache was wide left with an extra point attempt.
Cal lost a chance for a touchdown, when it got to the Washington 1 in the fourth quarter. On fourth down, Vedder fumbled the center snap and Todd Johnson recovered for the Huskies with 6:31 to go.
After the Vedder-to-Douglas touchdown, Brache's onside kick was covered by Dane Looker at the Huskies 45 and Washington ran out the clock.
Tuiasosopo, who lost a fumble and had a pass intercepted in the fourth quarter, was 15-for-27 for 165 yards. He had 32 yards and two TDs on a dozen carries.
Vedder was 22-for-42 for 283 yards and one touchdown with one interception.
Washington went 79 yards in eight plays the first time it had the ball. On third-and-9, Tuiasosopo took two steps back as if to pass, then sprinted up the wide-open middle and veered off at the 15, going into the end zone untouched.
The Huskies scored their second TD on Tuiasosopo's 1-yard keeper after a 49-yard, six-play drive. With 1:15 to go in the half, the Bears scored onMike Freeman's 1-yard run. Vedder avoided a rush and ran 18 yards to the Huskies 1 to set up the score.
Washington's 13 sacks tied a school record set last week against Utah State. Jarzynka's TD was the third-longest punt return for a score in Washington's history behind Hugh McElhenny's 100-yarder in 1951 and Steve Bramwell's 92-yarder in 1963. And it was the Huskies' first punt return for a TD in two seasons.
Tuiasosopo started his second straight game for Huard, who suffered a separated left shoulder against Arizona two weeks ago. Huard stood on the sideline in uniform and the Huskies said he could have played if had been needed.
