Husky Gymnasts Fall to Arizona State
SEATTLE, WA -- Despite placing first in all four events and winning the all-around competition, the 17th-ranked Washington women's gymnastics team lost to 16th-ranked Arizona State 194.525 to 193.975 in a dual meet at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. The loss dropped the Huskies to 7-2 while the Sun Devils improved their record to 11-1.
Washington junior All-American Tiffany Simpson placed first on the bars (9.875), balance beam (9.900) and floor exercise (9.900) competition and won the all-around (39.475) for the fourth time in five meets this year to lead the Huskies. Simpson recorded season high marks in all three events she won and turned in the top all-around score of the year for the Huskies. Her all-around score ties for the seventh best in UW history. Washington senior Klara Kudilkova turned in the top performance on vault (9.825) to give the Huskies a sweep of the individual awards.
The Sun Devils relied on a strong team effort to post the win and their second highest score of the season. Carie Courtney turned in ASU's top effort with a second-place finish on balance beam (9.800) to register a personal season high score. Also finishing second for the Sun Devils were Carie Courtney and Elizabeth Reid on balance beam with scores of 9.775.
A pair of falls on the balance beam proved to be the difference for the Huskies. The Sun Devils did not suffered a fall on the event and outscored Washington 48.625 to 47.950 in the event.
Washington will host 10-time NCAA Champion Utah next Friday at 7 p.m. PST in Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
