Captains Named for 1998 Husky Football Team
April 25, 1998
Two offensive players and two defensive players have been selected as captains of the 1998 Husky football team head coach Jim Lambright announced today. Roverback Nigel Burton (Sacramento, Calif.), tight end Reggie Davis (Long Beach, Calif.), inside linebacker Lester Towns (Pasadena, Calif.) and quarterback Brock Huard (Puyallup, Wash.) were chosen captains by a team vote Thursday. Burton and Davis will be seniors next season while Towns and Huard will be juniors.
"All four of these players have demonstrated they have the character and leadership qualities to be fine captains for our football team," Lambright said. "We have a fairly young team next season and this will be a good set of captains for those younger players to look up to. They will do a fine job of representing and guiding this football team.
"This year we decided to allowed the players to vote for juniors for captains because we wanted to have a better sampling from the players who have been in the program."
Burton transferred to Washington in 1996 after Pacific dropped its program. He has been a two-year starter at roverback on the Husky defense. Last season he was fifth on the team with 45 tackles. He is a two-time Region VIII Academic All-American and serves on the NCAA's national student-athlete advisory council.
Davis enters his senior season as the leading candidate to take over the vacated tight end position. A former defensive back and linebacker, Davis switched to h-back last season and caught two passes, including one touchdown reception, in his role as a backup. Davis is a member of the Washington Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
Towns was Washington's leading tackler in 1997 with 89 stops. He also registered 16 tackles for loss and five sacks to be the 1998 teams returning leader in both of those categories. Towns missed spring drills this year to undergo surgery on his left foot. He is expected to return as a starter at inside linebacker this fall.
Huard enters his junior season on pace to shatter a number of Washington's career passing marks. Last season he finished seventh in the nation in passing efficiency and helped Washington set a single-season passing record by throwing for 2,140 of the team's 2,790 yards. He enters the 1998 season ranked seventh on Washington's career passing list (3,818 yards) and holds the Husky career record for touchdown passes (36). Huard was named a Region VIII Academic All-American last season.
