Husky Gymnasts Upset Beavers
February 26, 1999
Seattle - The 21st-ranked Washington womens gymnastics team used a record-setting showing in one event and strong performances on uneven bars and floor exercise to upset 14th-ranked Oregon State 196.000 to 195.600 in Hec Edmundson Pavilion. The Huskies score was their highest of the season.
Washington was led by several outstanding individual efforts. Husky sophomore Lanna Apisukh tied for the all-around title with a career-best score of 39.475. Apisukh did not win any event titles, but set a career high on floor exercise with a 9.950 performance.
Apisukh was one of three Huskies to set career highs on floor to help clinch the victory. Junior Lauren Riesenman won the floor competition with a score of 9.975 while Amber Erdos turned in her best performance with a score of 9.900. Erdos also turned in career highs on bars (9.925) and beam (9.750). She placed third in the all-around with a career best score of 39.275.
Washington set a school record on uneven bars with a score of 49.400 thanks to career highs by four Husky competitors. Erdos and Apisukh along with Crystal Collins and Sidney Field all turned in career-bests. The Huskies score on floor exercise (49.350) , their final event of the meet, was a season best.
"We finally put it all together tonight," said Washington coach Bob Levesque. "I knew we were capable of posting a score like this. Our bars routines have not been consistent this year, so to go out and set a school record in the event was really impressive. I'm also very happy for Amber Erdos. On senior night she goes out and has the best meet of her life."
Oregon States Megan Murphy-Barcroft led the Beavers effort. She tied Apisukh for the all-around title and tied for first on vault (9.825) with teammate Lara Degenhardt. Murphy-Barcroft and won the balance beam (9.975). Murphy-Barcroft's performance was a career high for her in the all-around. Only one other OSU gymnasts, All-American Chari Knight, has poster higher all-around scores.
