Husky Duo Drops NCAA Doubles Match
May 28, 1999
Athens, GA - Washington mens tennis player, senior Eric Drew, won two singles matches today to advance to the semifinal round at the NCAA singles championship held in Athens, Ga. Drew teamed up with Robert Kendrick in second-round doubles action but lost in two sets. The 14th-ranked duo ended their season at 17-5.
To begin the day, the 58th-ranked Drew handed 23rd-ranked Justin ONeal of Florida only his sixth loss of the season, beating him 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the third-round. It was Drews third three-set match of the tournament.
He then improved his record to 23-7 upsetting fourth-seeded and sixth-ranked Esteban Carril of Texas Christian in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Carril dropped to 29-9. Drews advancement to the semifinal round is the farthest a Husky has advanced since Bill Quillian reached the NCAA finals in 1955. Jim Brink was the first Husky to reach the NCAA semifinals in 1948.
"I was happy not to go three sets," says Drew. "I got a little tight late in the second and dropped my serve. I was lucky to get my first serves in in the last game to close it out. Im feeling good right now and looking forward to the semifinal tomorrow."
Drew faces second-seeded and second-ranked Jeff Morrison of Florida tomorrow at 7 a.m. PDT. For live updates of Drews match, go to: www.sports.uga.edu
