Men's hoops coach hopes to continue success in Seattle.
April 9, 1998
SEATTLE -- Washington men's basketball coach Bob Bender announced Thursday night at the annual team banquet in Seattle that he has withdrawn his name from consideration for the head coaching position at the University of Texas. On Tuesday Bender was interviewed by Longhorn athletic director DeLoss Dodds in Dallas.
Bender informed Texas officials of his decision Thursday afternoon.
"I met with the team this afternoon," Bender said at the start of the banquet. "They were down in the weight room this afternoon and it was the first chance I've had to meet with them in the past few weeks. In the mean time, there is a lot that has happened and I'm sure all of you are aware of that. I told them this afternoon that there would be a decision made and there would be closure to a lot of questions very quickly.
"At that time I knew what it was, but I couldn't tell them for a number of reasons. It is actually pretty simple and I want to say that to start with tonight because I want to get on with what is really important and that is them.
"To let you know, I am going to be at the University of Washington.
"This is why it was such a simple decision. Just look at yourself. Look at yourselves and look at the kids tonight who are here to be honored. You look at Barbara Hedges, a person who has meant the world to me, who gave me a chance that has been tremendous. To the friends that we've made in this room, you don't leave."
This season Bender led Washington to a 20-10 record and an appearance in the NCAA tournament's Sweet 16 before the Huskies lost to Connecticut on a last-second shot.
