Feb. 2, 1998
SEATTLE--Three former Washington soccer standouts were drafted by Major League Soccer teams on Sunday. Jason Boyce was the 11th selection in the second round by the Colorado Rapids; Joe Franchino was picked sixth in the third round by the Los Angeles Galaxy; and Bill May was chosen seventh in the third round by the Tampa Bay Mutiny.
All were seniors on the 1997 team that advanced to the NCAA tournament for a school-record third straight year and finished with a 15-3-2 record. Boyce, a forward, earned MPSF Mountain Division Player of the Year honors this year for the second time and finished his career as the Husky leader in assists with 34. May finished as the nations leader in goals against average with 0.52, and his nine shutouts on the season upped his career total to 24. Franchino played two years at UW as the anchor in the midfield and earned first-team all-MPSF honors both seasons. This year he scored three goals, including the game-winner against North Carolina, and assisted on three others.
