SEATTLE--The Husky women's tennis team will face several of the top teams in the nation this weekend when it hosts the sixth annual Pac-10 Indoor Tennis Tournament. The tournament will be held at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday with singles competition. Doubles should begin around 4 p.m. Finals will begin Monday at 9 a.m.
A three-day pass to the tournament is $9. Daily passes are $5 for adults and $2 for children and seniors. UW students are admitted free with their I.D.
Of the eight teams entered--all Pac-10 schools except Oregon State and Stanford--seven are ranked in the nation's top 75, and 15 individuals are ranked in the top 100.
Washington appears in the preseason polls at 61st in the country and fourth in the Northwest Region. Sophomore Zuzana Stunova is ranked No. 27 in the nation and is tied for eighth in the region. Freshman Kristina Kraszewski appears at No. 34 nationally and sixth in the Northwest. Regionally, sophomore Jennifer Svanfeldt is 20th, sophomore Peggy Wu is 25th, and the doubles team of Kraszewski/Wu is 10th.
"We're very excited to host the Pac-10 Indoor Tournament," head coach Patty Fendick McCain said. "By hosting the Pac-10 Indoors, it gives our athletes a chance to improve their standings in the conference by playing against the top players. We have been working extremely hard and are very excited about this opportunity to see how we stack up. Some of our players are nationally ranked and it will give them a chance to make a statement about our program and our future."
The tournament will showcase several local tennis products. Four members of the UW team prepped in the area: junior Lara Botts (Mt. Rainer H.S.), senior Katie Huguenin (Bellevue H.S.), sophomore Zeta Wagner (Kentwood H.S.), and Wu (Sammamish H.S.). Two athletes on the Washington State team hail from the area: freshman Erica Perkins (University Prep) and Nikki Willard (Issaquah H.S.).
