SAN DIEGO-- The Washington baseball team suffered its first loss of the year Thursday night at the San Diego Baseball Classic, losing to the University of San Diego, 3-2, in a rain-shortened five-inning game. Washington fell to 4-1 on the season.
The Toreros (5-8) scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth, breaking a 2-2 tie just before the game was called. With two outs, Jeff Powers reached on an error by shortstop Kevin Miller. Kevin Reese followed by reaching on a bunt single, but a bad throw from third baseman Ryan Lentz allowed pinch runner Joe Lima to reach third. He scored on a wild pitch by freshman reliever Matt Gardner.
UW freshman John Gillespie (0-1) struck out seven and allowed only one earned run on three hits in four and two-thirds innings, but still suffered the loss in his first college start. USD ace Brian Mazone (3-0) remained unbeaten with five innings of work.
Trailing 1-0, the Huskies took a lead in the third inning. Chris Magruder was hit by a pitch to lead off and moved to third on a double by Kyle Woods. Miller followed with a double down the left field line two score two and give Washington a 2-1 lead.
The Toreros tied it at 2-2 in the bottom of the third when Reese's bunt single scored Juan Garcia from third.
Earlier on Thursday, Washington beat New Mexico, 8-5. The Huskies have a short turn-around as they are scheduled to face Minnesota at 10:00 a.m. Contingency plans have been made to play that game later in the day in Yuma, Ariz., depending on the weather in the San Diego area.
