Huskies Conclude Day Two of Battle for L.A.
March 01, 2025 | Beach Volleyball
LOS ANGELES β The No. 16 Washington beach volleyball team wrapped up a tough weekend at the Battle for L.A., facing two top-10 opponents, No. 3 USC and No. 8 Long Beach State, on Saturday at Merle Norman Stadium. Despite hard-fought efforts, the Huskies fell 4-1 in both matches.
Against third-ranked USC, Washington showed resilience in several tightly contested matches. The highlight of the dual came on court two, where Katarina Pantovic and Lauren Wilcock secured the Huskies' only point with a straight-set win, 21-19, 21-18. The pair controlled the tempo throughout the match, outlasting the Trojans in long rallies and capitalizing on key defensive plays.
On the top court, Teila Allen and Jade Sadeiko came out strong, battling through a marathon first set to win 26-24. However, USC regrouped to take the next two sets, 21-19, 15-8. The No. 5 duo of Hannah Doyle and Alina Urzua also pushed their match to the limit, taking the first set before falling in a three-set heartbreaker, 25-23, 18-21, 11-15.
USC took control on courts three and four, winning in straight sets. Brooke Balue and Niki Egan fought hard but fell 21-19, 21-18 on court three, while Emma Hohenauer and Sarah Wilcock lost 21-15, 21-16 at No. 4.
Despite the 4-1 score, Washington proved it could compete against one of the nation's top teams, forcing three-set battles on two courts and keeping multiple sets within just a few points.
The Huskies closed out the tournament against No. 8 Long Beach State, once again securing a point while forcing a three-set battle on court one.
Washington's lone victory came from Hohenauer and S. Wilcock, who dominated their match on court four with a 21-18, 21-9 win over the Beach. The duo controlled the tempo and executed efficiently to secure the victory.
On court one, Allen and Sadeiko pushed LBSU's No. 1 pair to the brink. After dropping the first set 18-21Β they responded with a strong 21-15 win in the second, forcing a deciding set. The Huskies battled to the wire but fell just short, 13-15.
At the No. 2 spot, Pantovic and L. Wilcock fought hard but came up short, losing 18-21, 13-21. Doyle and Urzua had a competitive second set on court five but couldn't complete the comeback, falling 21-10, 21-17.
Balue and Egan ran into a tough LBSU pair on court three, where they fell 21-10, 21-14.
