Maatoug, Foerster Run Record Miles
February 21, 2025 | Track & Field
SEATTLE โ Amina Maatoug and Chloe Foerster crossed within a split second of each other with the two fastest women's mile times in Husky history today at the BU Terrier Last Chance Invite, strengthening their chances to qualify for NCAA Indoors in that event. Maatoug, Foerster, and Mia Cochran, who was just off her PR in the mile, were the only three current Dawgs in action at this meet and for the weekend as a whole.
ย
Maatoug took second overall and was the top collegiate finisher today, running an aggressive and confident race that saw her cut two more seconds off her lifetime best, down to 4:26.39. Foerster had the best final kick in the field and nearly caught Maatoug at the line, dropping her PR down to 4:26.54. The two now rank No. 10 and No. 11 in NCAA history in the mile, and 8th and 9th in this record-setting season.
ย
Mia Cochran came through in 4:33.64, the third time this season she has clocked a 4:33 mile time.
ย
The men's mile, featuring four former Huskies and two future ones, also provided record thrills. Former Huskies and Olympians Sam Tanner and Kieran Lumb finished 1-2 with Tanner going 3:51.85 and Lumb going 3:52.39, but it was UW commits Owen Powell and Josiah Tostenson who stole the show.
ย
Powell went sub-four for the second week in a row after running 3:57 in the Dempsey last week. This time he ran 3:56.66 which breaks the U.S. High School Indoor National Record formerly held by Hobbs Kessler since 2021. It also ranks No. 5 on the U.S. junior all-time list, indoors or out. And one heat later, Tostenson broke four minutes for the first time in his high school career. The Central Point, Ore. native ran 3:57.47, which now ranks No. 2 in U.S. history indoors right behind Powell.
ย
Washington will now turn its attention to its first ever Big Ten Indoor Championships, next weekend in Indianapolis.
