O’Sullivan Lowers School Record In Paris
August 06, 2024 | Track & Field
SEATTLE – Sophie O'Sullivan ran the race of her life on the world's biggest stage this morning as she raced in the opening round of the 1,500-meters at the Olympic Games. Representing Ireland, O'Sullivan broke her own School Record by two seconds, nearly becoming only the third collegiate ever to go sub-four, as she ran 4:00.23.
That time puts the Husky rising senior at No. 3 all-time in collegiate history on the all-dates list. Only Addy Wiley (3:59.17) and Jenny Barringer (3:59.90) ever ran faster. It's the second straight year that O'Sullivan has run her PR on the world stage, as she went 4:02.15 in the first round of the World Championships last summer.
O'Sullivan may have broken the four-minute barrier were it not for some contact around the final turn that broke her stride and pushed her out wide on the last turn. She wound up seventh in her first round heat, one place out of the auto-qualifying top-six for the semifinals. Her time would have been the second-fastest time in heat two, and faster than the winning time of heat three, yet O'Sullivan will need to race the repechage round tomorrow for another shot at the semifinals. Were time qualifiers still in use this year, she would have had the fastest time qualifier in the field.
