
Dawgs Defeat No. 44 Illinois, Earn 10th Win of Season

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. β The Dawgs went down 1-0 early but never looked back, as the Husky women's tennis team improved to 10-3 after a 4-1 win over No. 44 Illinois Friday afternoon.

The Huskies (10-3) were forced into an early deficit after dropping the doubles point. No. 34 Astrid Olsen and Alexia Jacobs lost just their third doubles match this season, 6-3, shortly after Sarah-Maude Fortin and Erika Matsuda fell 6-3 on court 2.

Singles play proved to be no trouble for the Huskies, as the first three matches to finish gave up no more than two games to the Fighting Illini.

No. 78 Jacobs won her match first, 6-2, 6-1 to improve to 9-1 in singles action her freshman season.

No. 118 Melissa Sakar delivered dominance in her usual fashion, defeating Illinois' Treiber, to up the 6th-year senior's singles record to 11-2.

Catherine Gagnon won her fourth singles match in as many appearances on 6 to take down Ferrari (Illinois) 6-1, 6-2.

Olsen clinched the match for the Huskies with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Schaefbauer (Illinois) on court 3 as the graduate student is now 10-2 in singles.

The Dawgs take on No. 9 Ohio State on Sunday at 9 a.m.
