Lord, Matter Selected on Day Two of 2023 MLB Draft

SEATTLE β A pair of Washington Husky pitchers heard their names called on the second day of the 2023 MLB Draft on Monday as Kiefer Lord and Case Matter were drafted into the pro ranks.

Lord was selected in the third round by the Baltimore Orioles, while Matter was picked by the Texas Rangers in the 10th round.

The 2023 MLB Draft is being held right in the Huskies' backyard, taking place as part of MLB All-Star Weekend in Seattle.

Going with the 86th overall pick, Lord becomes Washington's highest draft selection since 2015, when Austin Rei was selected 81st overall by the Boston Red Sox.

Making the jump to the Pac-12 from NCAA Division III Carleton College in Minnesota, Lord starred on the mound in his first season in a Husky uniform in 2022.

An All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention selection, Lord led the Pac-12 with a 4.59 strikeout-to-walk ratio, also leading the conference with just 2.02 free passes surrendered per nine innings.

The San Carlos, California, native twice reeled in National Pitcher of the Week honors, Throwing six perfect innings with 10 strikeouts against Northern Colorado (March 4) and delivering eight shutout frames with 10 strikeouts at Stanford (April 22). Lord garnered Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week laurels for both performances as well.

Throughout his three seasons in Purple and Gold, Matter has become renowned for his swing and miss stuff, striking out 88 batters in 70.0 innings as a Husky.

Matter split the 2021 season between the bullpen and starting rotation, posting a .208 opponent batting average with 53 strikeouts over 43.1 frames.

The Mill Creek, Washington, native shined at the back end of the Husky bullpen in 2022. Matter garnered an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention nod, posting a 3.91 ERA with a 4-1 record and five saves. The UW closer held opponents to a .191 average, fanning 34 batters in 25.1 innings.
