Olsen Finishes Off Toreros After Postponement
March 21, 2023 | Women's Tennis
SAN DIEGO – Astrid Olsen had waited long enough. Two points away from victory and clinching a huge road win for the Dawgs on Tuesday, the match was suspended due to weather and the Huskies and Toreros had to come back this afternoon to pick things back up at the Hogan Tennis Center. Leading her third set, 5-2, and serving up 30-0 when the match resumed, Olsen forced an error after a long rally on the first point to reach match point, and her next serve was shanked long and that was that. The 16th-ranked Huskies had plenty of energy for a delayed celebration as they completed the 4-2 win over 39th-ranked USD.
Olsen's final win over Elizabeth Goldsmith made it a 4-2 final and meant that the teams did not have to play out the doubles point. Olsen completed a 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-2 win over Goldsmith and clinched for the fourth time in the past five Husky victories.
On Tuesday, in order to try and get the match in before the rain came, doubles was only to be played if necessary.
Getting the Huskies on the verge of the victory were singles wins by Hikaru Sato, Jennifer Kerr, and Erika Matsuda.
Sato took down 73rd-ranked Solymar Colling for one of her biggest wins of the season, beating the former All-American, 6-4, 7-5.
Kerr went down a set to 86th-ranked Abigail Desiatnikov but dug in and turned it into a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory, chalking up another ranked win and running her incredible dual record to 13-1.
Matsuda fought her way to a 7-6 (7), 1-6, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles over Jordyn McBride to put the Huskies up, 3-2.
Now 13-3 overall, UW will be off over the weekend and return to Pac-12 play on Apr. 2 at home against Oregon.
