UW Menโs Golf Inks Four to NLIs
November 14, 2023 | Men's Golf
SEATTLE โ Washington has inked four players to national letters of intent for the 2024 signing class as part of the signing period, head coach Alan Murray announced Tuesday.
ย
The Huskies' four signees come from both near and far as Amilkar Bhana (Johannesburg, South Africa), Abel Derksen (Gouda, Netherlands), Brock Maulding (Lake Tapps, Washington) and Jack Murphy (Cork, Ireland) all signed NLIs.
ย
"We lose four decorated seniors this year and we commence the building of the next great Husky golf team," Murray said. "This is a special class and I believe they will make their mark on the program. All will come in and contend for starting positions right from the get go."
ย
Below are a few remarks from Murray on U Dub's most recent signing class.
ย
Amilkar Bhana โ Johannesburg, South Africa
ย
"We are excited for Amilkar to get here. He has a syrupy fluid golf swing and is a really fantastic player to watch. He has a very steady game and is very solid across the board. He plays with a very mature poise and has been one of the best juniors in South Africa for his age group across a number of years and his national coaches speak extremely highly of him. He comes from a great family and I have really enjoyed getting to know his mother and father.
ย
"Amilkar has a very solid work ethic and he will really enjoy the challenge of balancing school and golf. He has always pushed himself academically and been able to keep his game at a really high level so he will take to college golf like a duck to water I am sure. He has a great personality and he will be a popular guy with his teammates and will have an instant impact."
ย
Abel Derksen โ Gouda, Netherlands
ย
"Abel is a superb golfer and this summer his game moved to the next level. He has represented the Netherlands at the junior level and is now on the men's panel. He won the Dutch National Match Play Championship this year. He is a superb ball striker and he will make the transition to college golf really well. His short game really improved over this past summer and he is very excited to get to Washington and make an impact on our program.
ย
"Abel recently finished sixthย in the Dutch Open which was a professional event. He has extensive experience competing in Europe and the US. He will be another freshmen that is going to come in and contend for a starting spot straight away. Abel is an ambitious, driven, calm guy and he will have a powerful presence. An intelligent, hard-working guy, Abel fits in great with what we want to do here."
ย
Brock Maulding โ Lake Tapps, Washington
ย
"It is always exciting to have a local guy come and join our program. Brock has family history with the Huskies and he has always bled purple. This means a lot to Brock and we are so proud and excited that he will officially become a Husky. Brock is a great athlete, like his parents and sisters, and has a big ceiling. He has a great attitude towards the game and I know that he will come in and have a positive impact on our program. He has leadership qualities and I feel that he will push his teammates and will be pushed by them and challenged to get better.
ย
"We are very excited with what he is going to bring to our team. He is one of four strong freshmen we will add. Brock has a solid all-around game and has been one of the best juniors in the state over the past couple of years. He finished top-10 in the AJGA at Big Sky and AJGA Phoenix Junior this past summer."
ย
Jack Murphy โ Cork, Ireland
ย
"Jack has proven himself to be one of the best juniors in Europe over the last couple of years. He is a determined competitor and has that steely nerve you see in the best players. He has extensive experience in team golf and he will really settle in well to the collegiate golf model and I believe like our other guys he will really be inspired by and have his game elevated by the strength of competition we will have on the team and at the tournaments we play.
ย
Jack was a member of the GB&I Jacques Leglise team as well as winning the Munster Boys Championship. He also registered top-10s in the Irish Boys Championship and the English Boys Championship. He has represented Ireland over the years and is another guy that will make an easy transition to the team aspect of college golf. Jack has a real drive about him and will be someone that's determined to make his mark here on Montlake."
