Season Preview: 2023-24 UW Men's Basketball
October 25, 2023 | Men's Basketball
SEATTLE – Washington has reloaded and retooled, bringing a bevy of talent onto the court for the 2023-24 season, which begins Monday, Nov. 6 at Alaska Airlines Arena.
"We are really excited for this season," said Head Coach Mike Hopkins. "We are optimistic about this new group and expect this team to be a lot of fun for our fans to watch."
Single game tickets for select non-conference games are on sale now. Fans will have a chance to see a quartet of 2023 NCAA Tournament teams in Hec Ed during the non-conference slate alone as Gonzaga, Nevada, Northern Kentucky and Montana State come to Seattle before the new year.
The Huskies welcome 11 newcomers for 2023-24 while returning six from last season's roster, including two starters. Fans will get a first look at this season's team on Sunday, Oct. 29 when the Dawgs host an exhibition game against Saint Martin's University.
The Returners
UW is one of three Pac-12 teams to return multiple All-Conference honorees. Preseason First-Team All-Conference choice Keion Brooks Jr. headlines the core of returners as the top returning scorer in the Pac-12. He averaged 17.7 points and 6.7 rebounds to earn Second Team All-Pac-12 honors a season ago.
Braxton Meah is back for another season in purple and gold after shooting over 70 percent in 2022-23 to lead the league and set a new single-season Husky record. He was selected to the All-Defensive team after averaging 1.6 blocks per game.
Koren Johnson enters his sophomore season following a stellar freshman campaign in which he racked up 34 steals off the bench, which were tied for second on the team. Franck Kepnang is expected to return to the frontcourt after missing the majority of the 2022-23 season due to injury.
The Newcomers
The Huskies added seven transfers, highlighted by Kentucky grad transfer Sahvir Wheeler and Rutgers product Paul Mulcahy. Wheeler twice led the SEC in assists, both times ranking in the top five in the NCAA with over six helpers per game. Mulcahy helped the Scarlet Knights to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and was a two-time Big Ten Honorable Mention.
Wilhelm Breidenbach (Nebraska), Nate Calmese (Lamar), Anthony Holland (Fresno State), Nehemie Kabeya (Carson-Newman) and Moses Wood (Portland) also arrived in Seattle via the transfer portal.
Four-star guard Wesley Yates III headlines the freshman class. Yates ranked 37th in the ESPN top 100.
