Huskies Advance to Regional Final

SEATTLE – The 13-seed Washington Huskies advanced to the Regional final after a 6-1 win over Lehigh on Saturday night in an elimination game.

Washington dropped its opening game of the day to Texas, 8-2. In the first game, the Huskies jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first over Texas on a Baylee Klingler two-run home run.

Starting pitcher, Gabbie Plain, had a no-hitter going through five innings when the Texas' Lauren Burke broke it up with a one out single out to center field. Plain and the Huskies defense were able to get out of the inning to keep it a two-run game.

Texas broke through in the sixth to take the 3-2 lead after scoring three unearned runs. The Longhorns tacked on five runs in the seventh to close out the game with the final score of 8-2.

The Huskies waited to find out the result of the Lehigh and Weber State game, in which they saw they would face the Mountain Hawks in the elimination game.

Brooke Nelson got the start vs. Lehigh and tossed six innings, allowing one run with three strikeouts and no walks. Nelson picked up her fifth win of the season.

Washington took the lead in the first on a solo home run by Madison Huskey.

In the top of the fifth, a pair of home runs by Sarah Willis and Kinsey Fielder made it a 3-0 game. Lehigh broke up Nelson's perfect game in the bottom half of the inning on an infield single, but were kept off the board.

The Mountain Hawks brought a run across in the sixth on an RBI single by Emily Cimino, cutting Washington's lead to two at 3-1.

The Dawgs responded by adding three insurance runs in the seventh on a Kelley Lynch home run, an RBI triple from Fiedler and a Klingler RBI base hit for the 6-1 advantage.

Willis came in to toss the final frame and retired the final three batter to advance the Huskies to the Regional final for a rematch with Texas at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
