
Loreen, Robinson Win Twice But Dawgs Fall Short

TUCSON, Ariz. β Washington's top pair of Natalie Robinson and Chloe Loreen continued to thrive with two more three-set wins, but the Huskies came up short in the team win column on the first day of action at the Pac-12 South Invitational. The Huskies dropped their opener to No. 17 Arizona, 4-1, then lost a tight one to Oregon, 3-2, at Arizona's Bear Down Beach.

Robinson and Loreen led the way once again at the top of the lineup. Against Arizona, they came back from a first set loss to outlast Parkhurst and Rennie, 15-21, 21-14, 16-14. In the match with the Ducks, the Huskies easily took set one, 21-12, but Nuneviller/Hope saved a match point to win the second set, 26-24. But the Huskies answered with 15-10 win in the third.

Loreen and Robinson are now 7-3 on the season. Robinson now has 34 career wins and Loreen is at 33, which puts Robinson in fifth in school history, and Loreen is tied for sixth.

Against the Wildcats, Ashley Shook and Olivia Mikkelsen took their match three sets but fell, 15-11, in the third. Shook and Mikkelsen came through next time out against the Ducks, beating Siegrist/Rothstein, 21-19, 21-14.

Oregon had third set wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 matches to pull out the close win. At No. 3, Audra Wilmes and Maeve Griffin won the first, 21-18, over Wetton/Laita, but lost the second, 21-15, and set three, 15-10. Oregon clinched at four, where Emma Calle and Hannah Yerex lost the first set but dominated the second, 21-10. But Oregon's Schroeder and Tyus got the third, 15-11.

The Huskies have two more tough matches on Sunday morning, starting at 8 a.m. against No. 11 California. Then UW faces No. 3 USC at 11:45 a.m. to finish up the trip.
